Hello Dave,
I use internet explorer to download this file. When I press enter on
brltty-5.1.apk, I get the question if I want to open or save
brltty-5.1.man, so at this point the damage has already been done.. When
I download brltty-latest.apk file, this issue doesn't occur.

I had the same issue. The download is announced as a .apk file,
however arrives on my computer as a .man file. After checking the
file size, I renamed it to .apk and installed it without problems.
How did you download it? If I can reproduce it then I can try to figure out
what's going on.
