 To clarify, You said before we use fetch in macports to get this source. So
does that mean, as I asked, that the source fetched from macports is exactly
the same as that from gnu? If so, then one can either use macports to fetch it
or can download it without having to install macports, correct?

Is what you are saying that if you compile from the fetched source it will by
default, if a person makes no changes, be in /usr/bin (which would be correct).
Also I think you are saying that you shouldn't do the "port install" which does
install in /opt/local/bin, which of course would be true because there is no
way to add the patch with the port install command. Wherever you install
screen-4.2.1, whether in /opt/local/bin or in /usr/bin, you need to check
whether another version of screen is there because Macports, if you previously
installed screen by the port install command, has it in /opt/local/bin, and Mac
OS has its version of screen in /usr/bin. If you are installing from screen
anyway, you can change where it is installed if you want to do so.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."
