It'd be good if you could try building a later version (either 5.2 or, even 
better, the latest development code). I understand your reason for not wanting 
to replace the distribution-provided brltty. There's still a way to do it, 
though.

When you configure brltty, specify something like: --prefix=/usr/local/brltty

Then, when you install it, that's where it'll go. It'll be an entirely separate 
brltty installation from the one your distribution is providing.

If you're at all worried that you still might accidentally install something on 
top of it, then create the target directory such that it's owned by your own 
account, and then even run make install as yourself.
