I understand your reason for not wanting to replace the distribution-provided brltty. There's still a way to do it, though. When you configure brltty, specify something like: --prefix=/usr/local/brltty Then, when you install it, that's where it'll go. It'll be an entirely separate brltty installation from the one your distribution is providing.
