If your sound card works from the virtual machine then it'd be best to set 
brltty's tune device to PCM.

The only beep command that I'm aware of is one which would have the same 
problem as brltty is having for you. It's just a command line way to beep the 
PC speaker with various options to control the frequency, length, etc of each 
beep.
