That is a good start.

How on earth can that have happened? Is that original from the time ti
was used for milk, or some silly later modification.

In my opinion that sort of paint will make the container pretty much
unsuitable for food production, ever. It may be possible to remove the
paint, but it will be a hell of a job, and probably will leave little
scratches that collect dirt and bacteria...

Instead of all the trouble, why don't you check what Brygladen charges
for a socalled Cornelius keg. That is what almost all of us home brewers
use, when we don't bottle. It should not be many hundred kroner, and it
is designed for beer, guaranteed to handle the presures involved, and
not to leak.

As to the tap, you can start with Brygladen's "picnic" tap. It connects
directly to the Cornelius keg, had something like 20cm of tubing, and a
simple tap in the other end. Does not look fancy nor professional, but
does the job pretty well.

Another alternative is to buy a few of those 5 liter kegs Irma sells,
drink the beer, and reuse them. I hear people have good experiences with
them. Maybe you can buy them empty for the deposit, just a few kroner.

Do you have a big pot to boil the stuff in? That is usually the major
problem beginners have. You can use the same pot for fermenting the
stuff - it is actually safer to do so, as there is less risk of
infection when you do not transfer the beer over.

What kind of beer are you after? These days you can make almost
anything, from pale pilsners to English Ales to belgian Abbeys.

Good luck with it. Do not hesitate to ask if you need more advice.
Better do it on the lsit, both as a check (they'll be glad to correct me
if I give strange advice), and to share with other beginners who may be
wondering, but haven't got around to asking.

Best regards

  Heikki
