Probably. If it is too small, you get some foam coming out of the air
lock. In the worst case, you get some hop leaves blocking the airlock,
until the pressure pushes the whole airlock out. Can make a bit of a
mess, but not a real problem...

Relax! A bit of air is probably harmless. When you rake the beer over to
the secondary, it will probably release enough CO2 to fill the airspace
up, or at least to cover the beer with a layer of it.

Some breweries use totally open fermenters!
