A nice book to pick up to learn the GNU tool chain and its various
components is:

I read an old version of this book (1st Ed circa 1996), and it looks like
its not updated since. You may not find latest features in this book,
but if you are after the fundamentals it should still apply nicely.
As another poster already suggested, all information reg the GNU tool
chain is already freely available. You just need to know where to look.
