I don't think any of the BSD OSs supports having ext{2,3} filesystems
has root filesystems. On FreeBSD, UFS and ZFS are the only filesystems
supported as root filesystems. So you need to have a small UFS/FFS
partition which holds your root filesystem, and then you can mount other
FSs on top of that. But, please note that this won't offer you GNU
userland (coreutils + findutils + sharutils) which ships with nearly all
of the GNU/Linux distributions.
