Catacombele din Paris
Catacombs of Paris |
Burial use in the depleted quarries was established in 1786 by the order of Monsieur Thiroux de Crosne, Lt. General of Police, and by Monsieur Guillaumot, Inspector General of Quarries.
In the 19th century, there is evidence that some families even lived in the catacombs.
Victor Hugo used his knowledge about the tunnel system in his novel Les Misérables.

During World War II, Parisian members of the French Resistance used the tunnel system. Also during this period, German soldiers established an underground bunker in the catacombs below Lycee Montaigne, a high school in the 6ème arrondissement. (This bunker is not in the tourist route and can only be seen during an "Unofficial Visit", see below.)
The section of the catacombs open to the public is only a small part of an extensive network of underground tunnels, which spans more than 300km (about 186 miles) in length.

Catacombele din Roma
Catacombs of Rome |
The Catacombs of Rome are ancient Jewish and Christian underground burial places near Rome, Italy.
The first large-scale catacombs were excavated from the 2nd century onwards.
The first large-scale catacombs were excavated from the 2nd century onwards.
There are forty known subterranean burial chambers in Rome. They were built along Roman roads, like the Via Appia, the Via Ostiense, the Via Labicana, the Via Tiburtina, and the Via Nomentana. Names of the catacombs like St Calixtus and St Sebastian alongside Via Appia refer to martyrs that are supposedly buried there.
Archeologist Giovanni Battista de Rossi (1822-1894) published the first extensive professional studies about catacombs. In 1956 and 1959 Italian authorities found more catacombs near Rome.
The catacombs have become an important monument of the early Christian church.
Currently maintenance of the catacombs is in the hands of the Papacy which has invested the Salesians of Don Bosco the supervision of the Catacombs of St. Callixtus on the outskirts of Rome.
They have frequently been a topic in classical music, featuring in one of Respighi's Pini di Roma and in Mussorgsky's Pictures from an Exhibition

Catacombele din Odessa, Ucraina
Odessa's tunnels and caves, originally quarried for sandstone nearly two hundred years ago during the 19th century, became a favored hideout for smugglers and partisans over the years. The catacombs are best known, however, for hiding anti-Nazi partisan units sheltering resistance fighters
A recreation of the resistance effort's headquarters with rusty bedsteads, desks, faded pictures of Soviet leaders, and old caches of ammunition is open to the public. This network of these excavated tunnels is part of the small but very popular Museum of Partisan Glory.
Much of the tunnel maze has yet to be excavated, however. A guide is strongly recommended for visitors when viewing the open network of catacombs located close seven miles from Odessa close to the village of Nerubaiskoye. Hotels and local travel agencies can assist visitors in booking a tour of Odessa's catacombs at a cost of 25 U.S. dollars.

Odessa underground tunnels (catacombs) were created nearly 200 years ago during mining of building materials that were used to build the city. Currently it is the maze of 2,500 kilometers with hundreds of entrances, exits, caves, and tunnels.
During the World War II, in 1941, when German and Romanian army occupied Odessa during the war, the Soviet Military headquarters gave the order to organize the partisan resistance. And Odessa catacombs were chosen as the camp for the unit of partisans. The provisions and weapons was enough there so the unit could stay underground for half a year. The partisan unit was fighting with nazi and Romanian army during all the period of occupation.
You'll walk in underground tunnels, where conditions of partisan camp are reconstructed and will listen to the history of struggle.
