Protests in Bucharest for demolition of Cathedral Plaza

published in issue 4465 page 1 at 2009-07-06

Approximately 60 faithful and representatives of NGOs have protested
yesterday in front of the St. Joseph Cathedral in Bucharest, asking for the
demolition of the Cathedral Plaza. The protesters and the representatives of
the Save Bucharest Association and the Civic Group have threatened that they
will organize a protest meeting every Sunday until the works on the building
located near the St. Joseph Cathedral stop. The faithful were asked by the
meeting's organizers to protest silently by taking a candle inside the
Church. The protesters asked for the construction to stop because the
building allegedly threatens the Cathedral that is part of the national
patrimony. The protesters claimed that the authorization of such a
construction close to a religious building represents another proof that
real-estate deals are held in higher regard than faith. Mariana Duma, the
president of the Bucharest Civic Group, pointed out that the civil society
is protesting against the Ploiesti Court of Appeal's decision for the works
to continue near the historical monument.
