Never mind : I bit te bullet, installed `subversin` and skimmed a tutorial.
I got a functional tree, created a VPATH and obtained a full configuration/compilation. Now to create a Debian package. The instructions aren't exeedingly blear, and `make DEB` does not seem to do what I expected it to do.
