If this makes a difference for you, then you likely have an incorrect
tex-site.el flying around in your load-path.

Try

M-x list-load-path-shadows RET

No, nothing there (apart from a duplicate calc folder). And I had a return of the same problem on my desktop machine, even with auctex.el being loaded. Anyway, it's not an urgent problem, since I solved it by forgetting about trying to customize the variables, and simply putting all the auto and style directories where auctex wants them to be. But it's quite mysterious.
