Ah. The usual "XEmacs is different" thing. My GNU Emacs 22 has:

  defvaralias is a built-in function in `C source code'.
  (defvaralias NEW-ALIAS BASE-VARIABLE &optional DOCSTRING)

Sorry I didn't test that before I committed it.
