I am also using the same version of Ghostscript, 8.53. Strange.
Hope to get some more help on this.

Just to have an additional data point I
downloaded AFPL Ghostscript 8.53 and used it with circ.tex. It is
working fine here. Here are the last lines of a `C-c C-p C-d'
