Could be a bug.

Only the tables would probably count.  But I would guess that your
document contains only tabulars (rather than tables) and thus is
completely without previewable material, and that the error message is a
bug in how this gets treated.

Which is wrong.  Use turn-on-reftex instead of reftex-mode.
