I can't agree with you being an idiot: this problem is certainly going
to affect people wanting to install AUCTeX for Emacs rather than XEmacs,
and I certainly appreciate the time you put into debugging it, and I am
sorry that I have not really had sufficient time to come up with good
suggestions making this easier.

Maybe.  I am surprised that we did not get one up to now.  The code in
question is not really that new, and I thought we had Solaris users.
Maybe it depends on some particular shell version.
