I don't think using old versions is the right way to go, but that's my
personal opinion.

In the email thread I referenced, the XEmacs maintainers seem to have
the opinion that it's a problem of XEmacs.  Why should I doubt them?

Hm, I thought we did provide access for historic versions, but on the
GNU FTP server I cannot find some of them.  Does anybody on the mailing
list know where the versions before 11.81 went?  11.13 and 11.14 are
mentioned in <URL:http://ftp.gnu.org/MISSING-FILES>, but what about the
11.5x packages?
