Some styles (e.g. memoir) load the style for 'shortvrb' (See (find-library "style/shortvrb.el")), which includes the behaviour you describe. I suggested before to not load shortvrb when loading memoir: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-auctex/2013-02/msg00000.html As a workaround, I have (setq LaTeX-shortvrb-chars nil) in my .emacs.
