The file is found and the buffer is in AUCTeX TeX-latex-mode, i.e., > `C-h v major-mode' says its `latex-mode', and `C-h f latex-mode' says: > > ,----[ C-h f latex-mode ] > | latex-mode is an alias for `TeX-latex-mode' in `tex-site.el'. > | > | (latex-mode) > | > | Major mode in AUCTeX for editing LaTeX files. > | See info under AUCTeX for full documentation. > | [...] > `---- I followed your detailed instruction but the problem was still there. So there had to be something irregular interfering with AUCTeX. I then realized that I had installed an emacs-snapshot and the problems had begun with the latest update. So I removed the emacs-snapshot from my system and installed the stable version of emacs 24. I then had to remove lots of "require"-lines in my ".emacs" but now everything seems to work in accordance with your descriptions and my expectations :-) Thanks, guys, for your help and patience!
