I did, and the problem remained.  However, using a different account, I
discovered that without any of my init.el or AUCTeX config, it works as
designed.  Tomorrow's job will be trying to find the guilty line of code
buried in there somewhere.

Thanks for getting back to me, and I guess since it is a "me" thing and not
an AUCTeX thing, this bug report can be closed.  (If I find an apparently
innocent config item which causes this problem, I can open another ticket.)
