They exist but they don't follow that naming convention. AC_PATH_PROG has that name because it looks in the PATH environment variable (a list of directory names), not because "path" means "absolute file name". I realize that I'm rewriting history here, to some extent. No doubt the people who invented AC_PATH_PROG meant for "path" to mean "absolute file name". But that meaning is contrary to the GNU coding standard so we don't want to encourage it in the Autoconf manual.
