I was finally able to have subversion fetch work through my proxy to
my Linux system, and downloaded the latest version of the boinc
source. With this updated download, configure ran without getting
an error in config.status. So the problem that I posted about is no
longer holding me back. (I'm still having compiler scope problems -
probably because I'm using a more recent version of the compiler
than Berkeley is.)
Ralf, thank you for the time and effort you've put in on my behalf.

p.s. I put this new subversion download into a __completely__ new
directory. Yet the configure there gave me an error message about
the source directory *already* being configured, until I renamed the
config.status file in the __old__ directory. (I had done a
re-boot of the system, yet obviously some sort of a hidden pointer
was left over somewhere that the new configure happened to pick up.)
