Follow-up Comment #2, sr #111402 (group autoconf): I can trace the code back to 2013 and it does appear in many ways similar to an example in an IBM publication about socket programming. What happened 13 years ago is not known, but this code somehow has been inserted into a configure.in file and later changes in compiler and include files may have broken it.
I believe this bug report can be closed.
