Dear All,

I am sorry if this issue has been brought up before, but I can't find a thread about it anywhere before, so I figured that for posterity it would make sense to document it on both mailing lists.

Projects that use GNU Autoconf and GNU Automake currently fail mysteriously when path names contain "odd" characters due to internal issues with quoting.

SRCDIR:
- ["'`#$&\\;| \t\n]: rejected by configure with "unsafe srcdir value."
- [:]: fails with the error "cannot find required auxiliary files."
- [()]: fails with the error "syntax error near unexpected token."
- [<>]: fails somewhere with "No such file or directory."
- [\r]: make fails with "No rule to make target 'main.c'."

BUILDDIR:
- ["'\\#$&`]: rejected by configure with "unsafe absolute working directory name."

I think that extra checks should be added, where applicable, to reject [:(<>)\r]. Further, perhaps some of the existing failures/rejections can be amended and fixed. I have a suspicion that something similar might be happening on Win32 platforms (MSYS, and so on) with file names "nul", "con", and so on, but I don't have the capacity to test that right now.
