Yes, I am guilty of „uselessly using cat“. As an apology I might add that I was thinking in terms of *process* substitution. > socat is very flexible, below is only one of the ways to do it. Thanks for that. This is indeed a very powerful program. I'll take it into consideration although I am quite tempted to upgrade to bash4 now after learning that coproc is exactly what I had in mind.
