I still think my solution fits the criteria exactly. There was *no* stated requirement that the "private mode" could not be a separate shell process. In fact, running a separate shell as your "private mode" shell makes perfect sense to me. It's more "secure" that way, right? All the crazy backflips that are being attempted in order to make the "private mode" coexist within the same shell process as "regular mode" can simply go away once you decide to separate the two.
