Otherwise key-by-key echoing is done by the kernel, which precludes showing a substitute character. ASCII full stop “.” (U+002e) is probably not the most common substitute character; I suggest that a bullet “•” (U+2022, with UTF-8), or asterisk “*” (U+002A, pure ASCII) might be more familiar to users. -Martin
