this to the list for the record.

  We later tried writing minimal reproducible code, but we couldn't
reproduce the problem. I'm wondering if this is an extreme edge case? Did
you change the job control system and the external command exit code
capture mechanism in versions 4.4.23 to 5.0.0? If these improvements
prevented the problem from recurring, then we decided to give up on further
troubleshooting. Do you think our approach is reasonable?
