As text, I suppose.
I do not know about the platform you are working with, but you must make sure that the skeleton files are converted to the local newline convention.
All I did was just download the source for 2.0 and
configure make make check
Then 122 out of 127 test cases failed, all with the same error message: "invalid token in skeleton"
On UNIX, one should write ./configure, to make sure it is the one in the directory executed.
