I don't think it would be much of a problem to put in 2.4.2, after all it's 
only when something goes wrong that this change is effective.  But I'm fine 
with just disabling the case for 2.4.2, and maybe work on 2.4.3.

I once started a thread on gnulib about getting a module that would replace our 
subpipe. Bruno pointed out that some of our assumptions in subpipe are wrong.  
Maybe 2.5 should aim at using what was done at that time.  ISTR that Paolo made 
a useful addition to gnulib about this.
