I found that with xlC 12.1.0.9 the problem no longer happens. So that's our work-around at the moment. The 12.1 C/C++ compilers are known not to optimize as well for our main machine (Power6) but are apparently more tailored for Power7 and later. Since the 11.1 line is still supported, I'll ask if a fix is available.
