Why not fix these problems by disambiguating the syntax? You can put
a new character in front of the new-format mode strings. E.g.,
chmod %-rw-rw-r-- file
Why not fix it with a seperate option instead (which this basicly is)?
Say, --human-readable (maybe a short option could be in order) to stay
in sync with the other utilities.
chmod --human-readable=HMODE FILE
HMODE standads for Human-readable MODE.
As for the idea, I love it!
