10MB of data seems big enough to avoid hitting the case on any normal file, for example. 8 char. long user seemed big enough, 2 char. years seemd big enough, argument lists of 1024 chars seemd long enough, etc etc. What seems big enough right now, might be laughable tomorrow, and will be a pita to fix. the OOM killer is known to sometimes misbehave and may well kill sshd on a remote server.
