I doubt that would happen.  But if you're worried about it, save the
old versions before installing the new ones.

I'm afraid it is.  The distributions are widely tested on a variety of
hosts before being uploaded, and the testing effort is not at all trivial.
Also, it's not trivial to decide which patches are worth applying.
