--sort-directories-first is I think a clearer name, --group-dirs says
nothing about how the directories are group, if there are several
groups, etc.  If --sort-directories-first is to long,

Ok, for me the option name is the least important thing: I'm going to make an alias to "ls -oh --color=tty --group-dirs" in any case ;)))

So, you coreutils developers should just converge me on a suitable name and I'll use it in my patch (which in any case I don't pretend to be applied verbatim ;)).

And if that is still to long,
maybe a new keyword for --sort would do.
Eric has proposed not to use this approach but rather create a new option.
