You'll need to post an actual testcase (probably by attachment, if it
really involves non-printing characters, to ensure mailers don't corrupt
it).  You may also want to check that your locale does what you think it
does when comparing strings (many non-C locales intentionally ignore
non-printing characters in strcoll).  Reread

for more ideas about how locale affects sort.
