Thanks for this "cp" copy command, it works and has good options. In "man cp" it states the "-p" option will preserve mode, ownership and timestamp. When I copy from a backup directory it does not preserve ownership, but does keep the original timestamp, which is usually all I've worried about before. Unless you are root, this seems to be correct; you can't give away files unless you are root...
