You do realize that it is possible to create a custom LC_MESSAGES locale which translates the strings "`" and "'" to your preferred quote strings? ~ For that matter, the [EMAIL PROTECTED] locale already does most of that - on capable terminals, it uses nicer-looking quotes and bolds the output (and since those quotes aren't active shell characters, copy-n-paste is less likely to cause accidents), and on less capable terminals, the output is transliterated to "\"" and "\"" rather than "`" and "'". - -- Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
