With what version of coreutils was that?
If it wasn't the latest snapshot, please try this:

  http://meyering.net/cu/coreutils-ss.tar.gz        8.8 MB
  http://meyering.net/cu/coreutils-ss.tar.lzma      3.7 MB

If the problem persists, please tell us about your systems
and include a syscall trace of the failing command (use strace on Linux,
truss on some other systems, ktrace, etc.).
