Then I suspect a portability problem, because if I simulate failure of that configure-time test, "make" does not try to build stdbuf or libstdbuf* on gnu/linux. If you can see (looking at src/Makefile) why it's trying to build stdbuf, we should be able to deduce where the problem lies.
