The Gregorian calendar was adopted at various times. `cal` assumes the British empire (including eastern US), so 1752: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar Thus 1700 is a leap year as it uses the old Julian rule of divisible by 4 cheers, Pádraig.
