That looks like a bug. Can you please try it with coreutils 8.13? That has some fixes in this area; the version you're using (8.4) is a bit old. ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-8.13.tar.gz If you're still seeing the problem with 8.13, can you please send your config.log (when building coreutils) and the output of the shell command "strace cp -p file1 file2"?
