I've tested my system with /etc/mtab being a symlink to /proc/mounts and everything seems to be OK. Moreover, tests/df/skip-duplicates.sh, which failed with /etc/mtab as a regular file, now runs successfully, as does the whole "make check". Thanks for your advice.
