Sorry for the lack of the response, I did not understand your question
at first.

But today I learned that Gnome allows you to create a ".hidden" file to
hide files in places like their Files application [1].

The 'ls' program does not read ".hidden" and ignore files listed there
since it is a Gnome specific thing.
