Hello! The file that is now in ftp://ftp.cvshome.org/pub/cvs-1.11/cvs-1.11.tar.gz is broken and shouldn't be released in its present form! That tarball contains files that shouldn't be included to the distribution, such as config.cache, config.h, config.log, config.status, Makefile and probably others. All those files are system specific and should be generated by the users who compile CVS. The only valid way to create a distribution is "make dist". Makefile contains rules describing how the distribution should be built. Ignoring those rules is like ignoring the will of the CVS developers while releasing a product of their work. If "make dist" is broken it should be fixed, but not ignored. I'm sorry to say it, but releasing CVS in this form will damage reputation of the people behind the release.
