Indeed, the current cvs doesn't accept entries without the port number
such as

:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/automake Ay=0=h<Z

If I run "cvs login" it writes the following to .cvspass:

:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:2401/cvs/automake Ay=0=h<Z

This is quite annoying. Your patch fixes it. Please apply it.
