In my experience, most of the NUL byte problems have been caused by an
interoperability problem between the Linux NFS implementation and some
variants of the original Sun NFS implementation (most commercial Unix
NFS implementations are based on the original Sun one).  I don't know
that anyone has ever definitively determined whether the problem is/was
in the Sun implementation, the Linux implementation, or the NFS
specification itself.
