Further to my note below :

Interestingly with 1.12.13 branch even external zlib linking
does not help! With 1.12.12 we were able to link to an external
1.2.3 zlib and it worked like a charm. Not so with 1.12.13

I am debugging the 1.12.13 src to see if I can come up with
something.

Regards

Hello Larry -

Thanks for the note.

As my bug report indicated, the "import step" might be the problem.
I tested with 1.12.13 branch and still have the same problem.
Using an external zlib (1.2.3) works. I haven't had the time to debug
the current zlib.c that was imported but the above testing does confirm
that things work fine with "pure" external zlib.

I had bundled a testcase that you can use to reproduce the problem
on 1.12.13. Let me know if you need any further clarification.

Thanks

Follow-up Comment #1:

You're a little late -- zlib 1.2.3 was imported into the 1.12 tree about a
month ago.
