Further to my note below :
Interestingly with 1.12.13 branch even external zlib linking
does not help! With 1.12.12 we were able to link to an external
1.2.3 zlib and it worked like a charm. Not so with 1.12.13
I am debugging the 1.12.13 src to see if I can come up with
something.

Using an external zlib (1.2.3) works. I haven't had the time to debug
the current zlib.c that was imported but the above testing does confirm
that things work fine with "pure" external zlib.
I had bundled a testcase that you can use to reproduce the problem
on 1.12.13. Let me know if you need any further clarification.
