Ddrescue needs, by the very nature of its algorithm, seekable input and output. dd works for you because it does not skip bad areas to retry them later. Ddrescue is a rescue program, not a copy program.

If you only want to recover the non damaged parts of the disc, you may try 'dd conv=noerror,notrunc,sync'
