Random thoughts. 1) Error in the first sector? Try "dd if=/dev/sdh | hd | less" - this will show you the first sector's contents. Then try on the destination drive. 2) OS hasn't reloaded the partition information? Try partprobe, or rebooting. 3) What does fdisk -l /dev/sdb give? 4) I have had bad results with the source (failing) drive connected via USB. Errors seemed to get lost in the system and the destination drive ended up full of repeated junk.
